Meteor showers

The peak of every major meteor shower, with how many to expect, how bright the Moon is that night and where to look.

Next big one: Geminid meteor shower 2026

72days 23hours 18minutes 45seconds

Meteor showers come back on the same dates every year as the Earth crosses the dust streams of old comets. The peak hour moves a little from year to year, and the Moon decides how many you see: a bright one washes out all but the brightest.

What is the best meteor shower of the year?

The Geminids in December, with up to 150 an hour and meteors from mid-evening, then the Perseids in August, up to 100 an hour on warm nights. The Quadrantids in January can match them for a few hours. The Moon on the night matters as much as the shower.
